Our origin story
The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation was formed in 2011 at the direction of Mercedes Eichholz, who alongside her late husband Robert was an avid arts enthusiast and philanthropist.
Our mission is to support the arts in all of their forms as a fundamental part of human life.
Since 2011, the Foundation has given over $30M in grants to more than 200 organizations across the United States and abroad. The Foundation is overseen by a Board of Trustees primarily composed of the descendants of both Robert and Mercedes Eichholz.
More about Our Founders
Robert and Mercedes
Robert and Mercedes were both lovers of the arts, including but not limited to modern and contemporary painting, sculpture, ballet, classical music, jazz, musical theater, opera, photography, poetry, textile art, and beyond. Their passion for the arts extended to financial support of numerous arts institutions throughout the United States.
After a lifetime of supporting the arts, Mercedes along with her family decided to form the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation to continue supporting arts causes in a meaningful way after her death. The children and grandchildren of Robert and Mercedes Eichholz currently act as trustees of the Eichholz Foundation. Mercedes' only granddaughter, Alexa Davidson Suskin, serves as the Executive Director.
